As most of you know, I write for a group blog, Who’s Your Dachshund? The ten writers of the blog are teaming up to raise money for a shelter or rescue organization in each of our local areas.

Adley and Radish are a humongous part of my life, and I know that those of you who have dog family members feel the same. Their loyalty is astounding–I could be having an awful day, being mean to everyone around me, but that never stops one of them from wanting to curl up in my lap to keep me company. That goes such a long way toward making my day better!

They are truly lucky dogs. They have devoted care takers. Our first priority in the morning is them–have they gone out, have they eaten, are they comfortable? Lucky, indeed. This month marks our first anniversary of rescuing Radish. She has enriched my life in so many ways. There is nothing more heartening than seeing her come out of her shell of fear and neglect as she develops into a warm, trusting dog.

However, too many other dogs are not this lucky–yet. Our fundraiser supports the organizations that help get dogs into homes that will provide them with this same kind of love.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Roger Caras: “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

Help us help dogs have a fair shake at whole lives by contributing to the fundraiser. For the rest of the month, I will have a button on the side of the page where you can click to make a secure donation through ChipIn. Anything helps–just a few dollars can provide food for a foster mom to feed a pup for a month.

Check out this site for even more details.

Here are the organizations we are supporting:

Bide Awhile
Tiny Paws Dog Rescue
Midwest Dachshund Rescue
All American Dachshund Rescue
Dachshund Rescue of North America - Maryland Chapter
Dachshund Rescue NW
Central Texas Dachshund Rescue (This one serves dachshunds in my area)
Second Chance Animal Refuge Society
Kitty and Puppy Haven
FACE Low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic

Be sure to visit Who’s Your Dachshund? several times this month to check out guest posts from some of these organizations. We’re very excited to be working with them! You’ll also have several opportunities to win prizes. You can also follow our progress on Twitter.

Do you have any experiences with rescuing a dog? I’d love to hear about them in the comments! If I get enough stories, I’d like to compile them in a post with pictures from you of your dogs.

Yay for little Radish! She couldn’t have ended up in a better spot :)

We rescued Kaya when we were looking for a second dog. She was almost six years old. She had lived with her previous family for her entire life when they suddenly decided that they didn’t want to have a dog anymore. :( Poor Kaya, she’s such a people person. I can still imagine how she must have felt those first few days with us — looking everywhere for her people. Now, we’re her people. She follows me around the house all day long. She is the sweetest dog on the planet and I love her to pieces!

I think Donate 4 Dachshunds is such an awesome idea! I hope you are raising tons of money!
